This foundational learning module is for healthcare practitioners supporting patients using medicinal cannabis. Topics covered include the safe and effective management of medicinal cannabis in pharmacy, with a focus on state regulations, compliant dispensing processes, informed patient counselling, and risk assessment.

Learners will examine the scheduling and categorization of THC and CBD, assess potential drug interactions, and compare the pharmacology of different dosage forms and administration routes, and appropriate titration strategies.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this activity pharmacists should be able to:

1. List the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists in the dispensing and counselling of medicinal cannabis products.
2. Describe the pharmacological properties, indications and poison schedules of THC and CBD.
3. Identify and analyse potential drug interactions between medicinal cannabis and commonly prescribed medications.
4. Evaluate appropriate dosage forms and routes of administration based on patient needs and pharmacokinetic profiles.
5. Explain the mechanisms of action and bioavailability differences between inhaled and oral cannabis formulations.
