Medicinal Cannabis for Pharmacists - Anxiety Case Study
This extension module explores the role of medicinal cannabis in anxiety and related conditions. The content reviews the pathogenesis, prevalence, and burden of anxiety, while examining the role of the endocannabinoid system in mood regulation.
Learners will explore how CBD and THC influence anxiety, distinguish the dose-dependent effects of THC, and assess the appropriateness of CBD-dominant, THC-dominant, and balanced formulations. Clinical considerations such as patient screening, titration, psychoeducation, and follow-up will be addressed to support safe, evidence-informed use of medicinal cannabis in anxiety management.
A Case study will be presented to develop and assess clinical reasoning and practice management skills, identify knowledge gaps, and provide a framework for clinical supervision and feedback.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this activity pharmacists should be able to:
- Apply knowledge of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and neurotransmitters involved in the pathogenesis of anxiety to explain the mechanisms by which CBD and THC influence anxiety and mood.
-
Differentiate the dose-dependent effects of THC on anxiety, including anxiolytic versus anxiogenic outcomes.
-
Evaluate the appropriateness of CBD-dominant, THC-dominant and balanced medicinal cannabis formulations in the management of anxiety.
-
Asses risk mitigation strategies including patient screening, titration, psychoeducation and follow-up when prescribing medicinal cannabis for anxiety.
